WHAT IS THE IPN INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK

Below is some introductory information about the IPN Integrated Framework, including program goals and constituent elements. This program is part of the InterPlaNetary Internet Special Interest Group (IPNSIG), an Internet Society (ISOC) chapter, operated and supported by the San Francisco Bay Internet Society (SFBayISOC).

 

GOALS of the IPN INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK

  1. CONTINUE and CONVERGE EXISTING ACTIVITIES: Leverage existing IPN work-in-progress to continue building the foundation of the IPN Integrated Framework, including converging projects, activities, and resources where appropriate.
  2. EXPAND EXISTING and INITIATE NEW ACTIVITIES: Expand existing projects and/or initiate new projects, in response to IPN activity and funding allocated to the IPN Integrated Framework.
  3. ESTABLISH, MAINTAIN, and EVOLVE the IPN INTEGRATED ARCHITECTURE: Develop and maintain the Integrated Architecture, including defining and integrating all IPN constituent elements, in compliance with the IPN Integrated Architecture processes, policies, and standards.
  4. ALIGN with the DTN INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK: Align the IPN Integrated Framework with the DTN Integrated Framework, which includes leveraging the DTN protocol as the standard for all IPN activities, projects, and operations.
  5. ENGAGE ISOC MEMBERS: Partner with global ISOC and its chapters to collaborate on joint projects and events, and invite ISOC chapter members to participate in IPN Integrated Framework projects, specific to their interests.
  6. PARTNER with CAMPUS PARTY MEMBERS: Partner with the Campus Party organization to develop joint IPN projects specific to each Campus Party event’s focus, and invite invite Campus Party members to participate in IPN Integrated Framework projects, specific to their interests.
  7. PARTNER with TEACHERS WITHOUT BORDERS (TWB): Partner with the TWB organization to develop joint projects specific to TWB current focus, and invite invite TWB members to participate in IPN Integrated Framework projects, specific to their interests.
  8. PARTNER with ACADEMIC MEMBERS: Partner with academia by exchanging information and knowledge, and developing joint IPN projects specific to their research strengths and interests.
  9. SHOWCASE PROJECTS at EVENTS: Present IPN information, and showcase projects, including demos, during ISOC, Campus Party, academic events, and industry events.

 

ELEMENTS OF THE IPN INTEGRATED PROGRAM FRAMEWORK

Three disciplines constitute the IPN Integrated Framework, in accordance with short-term and long-term goals and capabilities of the IPN. These are listed below:

  1. IPN Internet Engineering
  2. IPN Astronautical Engineering
  3. IPN Cognitive Sciences

These three disciplines have been selected based on the need for a network of “intelligent” satellites, and other space-faring platforms, and ground stations, equipped with devices running an IPN-compliant Internet protocol, specifically the DTN protocol, and address the communication, storage, and encryption requirements. Additional disciplines may be added to the IPN Integrated Program Framework, in alignment with IPN’s future goals and capabilities.

 

IPN INTEGRATED FRAMEWORK PROJECTS

Proposed IPN Integrated Framework projects are selected according to their contribution to the IPN. Reference 1, listed below, provides the list of current IPN projects. ISOC, Campus Party, academic, and industry members are invited to participate in these projects, according to their expertise, strengths, and interests.
